Knowing better Rocio Arroyave Egipciaco!!!!

            Hi there! My name is Rocio Arroyave Egipciaco and I’m 20 years old. I study in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Campus, my third year of Industrial Biotechnology. My wish is to pursue my PhD in Biomedical Science, specialized in genetics. Why, you might ask? Very simple, I want to do something that motivates me to get up early in the morning and feel that today I might make a difference whether I am recognized or not. A tool, you might call it, but I see myself more as the helping hand.

            I catch myself wondering what I can do to help those in need. I find myself wanting to know how to make some pains go away, some hearts be healed and some lives be reformed. My wish is to become a knowledgeable person that can help in the process of healing, that can ultimately improve quality life of those around me and assure the generations to come.  Sounds ambitious, but ever since I was little I have been a very driven and determined child. I believe that with perseverance, tolerance, wisdom, determination and faith one can achieve its purpose in this life.

            Do I want to clone human beings or human emotions? No, my simple wish is to improve the lives of those who suffer today. If we gaze into genetics you see an endless opportunity field waiting to be discovered and put in good use. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could find the degenerated gene that causes Progeria (rapid aging) in children and fix it? giving children the opportunity to enjoy their childhood as they are supposed to. Or maybe find the gene that causes Parkinson’s or Child Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, what If we could help them? I just know I want to and for me that is enough motivation to continue my education in science.

            I know the times ahead of me might be shaken, doubted or pretty much denied, but I do remember the words of a very wise man who said: “Great spirits have often encountered violent oppositions from mediocre minds” and I try not to fear. My faith is my north and I shall hold on to it. Our profession is our road to self-realization, accomplishment but most of all our sense of purpose in this life.

            I am Rocío Arroyave and I am an Industrial Biotechnologist who wishes to become a doctor in Biomedical Science specialized in genetics, who wishes to improve quality life, who wishes to assure peoples health but most of all an ambitious young lady who wishes to witness a miracle by changing the world one step at a time.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.
